30th ANNIVERSARY OF SARAJEVO CITY HALL SHELLING

Sarajevo City Hall - Targeting History and Memory

The shelling of the National Library on 25. August 1992 set the building ablaze and destroy millions of books, prompting widespread outrage and condemnation by the international public. It was qualified as the ‘cultural mutilation‘ of Sarajevo and an attempt to ‘erase Bosnia’s history’.

Crimes against historical and cultural heritage during the wars in the former Yugoslavia are extensively described in the interactive narrative "Targeting History And Memory" produced by the SENSE Center for Transitional Justice. Within that narrative, the case of the National Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, also known as Sarajevo City Hall, received a special place.
