SENSE Transitional Justice Center hosted a workshop for history teachers on the use of the archives of the ICTY and Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, bringing together twenty educators from Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Northern Macedonia.
The workshop was organized in Pula by the Mechanism's Information Program (MIP), in cooperation with SENSE Center, the Croatian History Teachers Association and its European counterpart EUROCLIO. The participants were shown how to use the online archives of the ICTY and SENSE TJC, followed by practical exercises to create teaching material using the Tribunal archives.
This was one in a series of MIP workshops for history teachers in the countries of the former Yugoslavia held with the aim to train them on how to effectively use judicially-established facts when creating educational material related to the 1990s conflicts.
A new website project that is currently being developed by SENSE was shown to the workshop participants. It is called ICTY Oral History and will be formally launched in the coming days. It's a compilation of over fifty video interviews which SENSE made between 1998 and 2017 with the ICTY presidents, judges, prosecutors, investigators, defense counsels and other actors involved in the work of the Tribunal and the development of international criminal law. They reveal uncertainties, failures but also important achievements of this institution since it was established in 1993. Their stories will help the public understand and appreciate the work of the ICTY.
